Donkey Kong Country TV Show

(Click for larger sized image)

Yep, being such a smash hit game, it had to get a TV Show.

The Donkey Kong Country TV Show was made by Nelvana in '96 and was loosely based on the
Donkey Kong Country Games. It first aired in France in '96 and was later brought to North America in '98.

It aired on various networks, ABC Family, Fox, Teletoon(Canada).

I say it's loosely based on the games as it is different in a few ways, but I guess that may be expected turning a Super Nintendo Game into a TV Series.

You still have the original Kongs of DKC, and many of the enemies, as well as some new members, Dixie from DKC2 is in here, and the created a new Kong Buster Kong, as the owner of the
Barrelworks Factory and Candy's boss.

Just like in the games King K. Rool was DK's primary enemy and K. Rool's 2nd and 3rd on command Klump and Krusha were usually alongside him, or doing missions for him. You also see random Kremlings running around, doing various things, but not really cast members, more of extras.

To give the show a plot they created "The Crystal Coconut" which is a magical powerful item that can do good, as well as evil, depending on who has it. So it's kept safe at Cranky's House. But then pretty much every episode King K. Rool tries some way to get the coconut somehow, and DK and Diddy have to stop him, or get it back after its stolen.

The characters act pretty much how you would expect them too. Donkey is the kind of dimwitted Hero, Diddy is his smarter younger Bro who's always with him, hanging out helping him. Candy is DK's girlfriend, but is more assertive and intelligent then the sort of ditzy way she was portrayed in DKC the game, which I think was a very good idea.
Dixie's there, as you would expect, hanging out with Diddy sometimes. Cranky is the wise cranky ape who teaches and helps DK and Diddy. Funky is the fun, free spirited ape who runs the airport, and that airplane is needed in some episodes. King K. Rool is as you expect, the evil genious. Klump is his average intelligence general, and Krusha the dumb but very strong soldier.
And that Buster I mentioned is the kind of rich, snobby, jerk who runs the BarrelWorks Factory.

Episodes consisted usually of King K. Rool doing something evil, and DK trying to stop it. But there were other types of episodes, such as ones with the created Kaptain Skurvy, a Pirate that DK had to face. You got to see the jungle type areas you'd expect, and even Mine Cart Races, which they had to have.

Music. The series did have a variety of music-type videos in the middle of episodes. Randomly during an episode a character or characters may start singing. It would be fairly well written, and fit in with the episode. Teletoon even cut some of these music videos out of the shows, and would randomly air them during commercials of random shows.

The series got 40 episodes, and some have been released on VHS.

My thoughts on the series? If by some random reason you want them. :P

I first watched the show around '98. I had just moved, and turned on the TV, and saw on Teletoon them airing a Donkey Kong Country show, the first I'd heard of it. I was VERY happy and excited.
I watched it whenever it was on, all the time, until the stopped airing it. I thought the show was alright, it looked pretty cool as well, all 3D. I thought the stories were interesting and cool, and that it stayed pretty true to Rare's DKC Game Series. But one thing I just disliked was all the singing. As I recall their were 2 songs every episode! So twice every episode, you'd be all into the show and then they would just start singing something. Granted the songs were fairly well written and sang, and did relate to the story, but twice an episode! That is just too much, it would get sort of boring. But when it got back into the show, I was right there, all excited waiting to watch. But me and my bro still make a joke about that singing, randomly we might just sing "Why'd I have to fall for a hero, HERO!" which is what Candy sang once, and Teletoon even randomly played that as a music video sometimes, during commercials of random shows.
But again, I haven't watched the show in about 7 or more years, so my memory could be a bit confused, maybe they only sang a couple songs in 1 or 2 or a few episodes, and I just blew that up to almost every episode.

But all in all, it was a good show, and and I'd love to watch some episodes again, I hope it get's released on DVD.
